Substance Abuse Counselor

Substance Abuse Counselors provide assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, case management, and recovery support services to individuals with alcohol and drug use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, and addictive behaviors. BLS projects 16.8% growth in this occupation by 2034, adding over 80,000 new positions, driven by increased recognition of addiction as a public health issue and expanded treatment access through insurance parity laws.
