Notary (Notaire)

Notaries (Notaires) are French public officials appointed by the Minister of Justice who authenticate legal documents including real estate transactions, marriage contracts, wills, and business incorporations, providing legal certainty and public records. The French notary system differs fundamentally from common law systems, with notaires holding a monopoly on certain transaction types. Access requires a demanding academic path culminating in the Diplome Superieur du Notariat and a regulated number of available positions through the French Ministry of Justice.
